The article, based on diverse sources from the collections of the State Archive of the Irkutsk Region and the Irkutsk Regional Art Museum named after V.P. Sukachev, describes the activities of representatives of the artistic intelligentsia of Irkutsk and collectors close to it in the study and popularization of Siberian nature, including waterways and reservoirs, in the second half of the 19th – early 20th century. The artists were part of hydrographic expeditions, including those organized by the East Siberian Department of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society. They influenced the formation of the image of the North and Baikal Siberia among contemporaries. Irkutsk collectors close to the artists acquired and exhibited paintings depicting views of Siberian rivers, lakes, and the Arctic Ocean in museums and at various venues. The revealed constituent and accompanying documents, reports, plans, posters, announcements allow us to reconstruct in detail the history of the creation of vast collections of art objects by Irkutsk residents, the implementation of large exhibition projects, to highlight the role of artists and collectors in the study and popularization of the natural resources of Siberia.
