Development of Waterways in the Northern Part of the Yenisey Basin in the 17th – Early 20th Century

An overview of the development of the waterways in the Northern Part of the Yenisey basin in the period from the construction of the Mangazeya settlement in 1601 to the organization of regular steamship traffic in the early 20th century is presented. That allows to track changes in the development of river systems in the region. The article shows how the Cossacks used the river route from the Taz Bay of the Ob Gulf to the Upper, Lower, Podkamennaya Tunguska and the basins of other Siberian rivers to move east from the Ob. The movement of the Russian population to the east led to the creation of the Great Siberian River Route, which in the Yenisey basin passed along the Angara river and was used for domestic and international trade, transportation of government goods and delivery of exiles. It is considered how the state and representatives of private capital were engaged in the development of the waterway from the Ob to Lake Baikal, how, with the development of the fishing and gold mining industry in the Yeniseysk province, they began to involve new rivers in the transport turnover, put steamships into operation, and equip transport routes. The interest of the state, Russian and foreign entrepreneurs in the trade of European and Siberian goods pushed them to develop the transport capabilities of the Northern Sea Route. At the beginning of the 20th century, river transport, which served the fishing industry, gold mining and fur trade, switched to providing passenger transportation on a regular basis. Sea transportation, despite its obvious development, was still in its infancy.
