The history of shipbuilding in pre-Petrine Russia has found quite wide coverage in domestic historiography. At the same time, the issue of the genesis of the shipbuilding industry as one of the branches of military production cannot be considered finally resolved. To solve this problem, the article proposes signs of institutionalization of shipbuilding as a branch of industry and analyzes the works of domestic authors of the pre-revolutionary, Soviet and post-Soviet periods in order to identify these signs. The study shows that domestic historiography has developed a stable idea of the beginning of organized state shipbuilding in the 17th century, and as areas of its localization were considered village Dedinovo on the Oka River, the city of Kokenhausen on the River Western Dvina, the Don River basin, Bryansk, and the Volga region. The results of shipbuilding activities in these areas revealed by domestic researchers allow us to state that in the 17th century there was no full-fledged shipbuilding industry in Russia. At the same time, the rudiments of production infrastructure and supporting industries emerged at that time. Besides, there was an experience of mobilization of human and material resources for shipbuilding, experience of foreign specialists attraction, which was widely used in the period of the navy creation under Peter I. The conducted study made it possible to outline the directions of further scientific research in the designated area, which will confirm or refute a number of conclusions, reflected in the domestic historiography, although being speculative in nature and not based on reliable historical facts.
