This article discusses issues related to the importance of water resources in the subculture of the domestic provincial nobility. Based on memoir literature, as well as existing research on the topic, it can be stated that the reservoir played a significant role in the daily life of the nobility rural estate and, accordingly, its inhabitants. The place for the construction of the master’s house was not necessarily chosen taking into account the availability of natural water sources. In places that lacked access to adequate water supply, relevant engineering works on the creation of artificial reservoirs were carried out. Ponds in the estates served both the household and utilitarian purposes, as well as aesthetic, representative, recreational. The nobility living in the cities, also used the benefits provided by water sources everywhere. The paper is concerned with rivers as ways to communicate, entertainment, cultural and leisure values of water sources, the emergence of water sports. All this activity contributed to the formation of a national mental characteristic, which consists in the perception of water as good, a source of life and a semi-pagan-half-Christian cult.
