The article deals with the formation of the historical memory of the Great Patriotic War in Kazakhstan. Memory studies is one of the most successfully developing research areas in the scientific and humanitarian space. The author believes that in combination with the political restructuring and the parade of sovereignties, there was a cardinal reset of the scientific paradigm in the post-Soviet space, the “change of discursive formations” and the “will to knowledge” caused criticism and objectivity of research practices in the focus of historical memory. The history of the Great Patriotic War received a detailed study in the post-Soviet era. There was no information in the collective memory of Soviet society about the catastrophic defeat of the Soviet army and the huge number of prisoners of war who found themselves in the hands of the Fascist occupationists in the first months of the war. At the same time, the attempt to legitimize the members of the Turkestan Legion caused a lot of both negative and positive assessments. This topic requires more detailed scientific research and an objective perception of the tragic events of the past. The author identities commemorative practices and analyzes of their content given. We observe an active ethnization of memory in the geographical space of Kazakhstan. The author believes that the official state policy on the formation of historical memory of the Great Patriotic War in Kazakhstan has framework parameters, and does not contradict the content of collective memory. The content of the latter has common trends with the state historical policy in Russia, Belarus, intersecting with the states of Central Asia. The historical memory of the war in the post-Soviet space has passed the stage of oblivion, historical trauma, overcoming. The current stage is the construction of historical memory and the formation of one’s own identity on its basis.
