The article deals with a little-studied issue from the history of the origin of Alexey Vasil’evich Makarov, the secretary of the Cabinet of Peter the Great, and the reasons of his promotion to the top of Russian ruling elite at the early 18th century. The study is based on the analysis of the documents from the archive of the Makarov family, which now is preserved in the Manuscript Department of National library of Russia. The major part of this archive has never been investigated. The results of the analysis of the family acts and some other historical sources confirm Vologda as the birthplace of A.V. Makarov and give historians a chance to create a genealogical scheme of the Makarov family. At the same time, the study discredits the legendary story of the meeting between young local official A.V. Makarov and tsar Peter I in Vologda in 1693. The discovered documents from the archive shows that in the late 1680s – early 1690s his aunt, Tatiana Grigor’evna Makarova, intermarried with the family of famous Moscow officials Shapkins. The author advances a hypothesis that the informal relationships between the Shapkin and Makarov families influenced strongly on the career of A.V. Makarov.
