Participants of the Resistance Movement in France and the Soviet Award Diplomacy (1955–1965)

 DOI: 10.31518/2618-9100-2021-3-15

The article deals with the presentation of Soviet awards to the participants of the European resistance movement in France, which took place in the period from 1955 to 1965 within the framework of Soviet award diplomacy. Among the recipients were both French citizens and Russian emigrants. At this time, the award mechanism was formed, the stages of passing the decision on awarding and its approval were worked out, but there was no single principle according to which awards were awarded, except for the general attitude to awarding Resistance participants. In the case of Russian emigrants, their awarding was initiated by the KGB for the purpose of pro-Soviet propaganda among White emigrants and displaced persons. The awards were a special area of cultural diplomacy, made to demonstrate the loyalty of the two states and promote peacemaking in Western public opinion in the Cold War.
