 DOI: 10.31518/2618-9100-2021-3-12

The article tells about the life of Archbishop Pavel (Golyshev). He is well remembered by the Christian people in Siberia for during 1964-1972 he served as the ruling Bishop of the Novosibirsk diocese. The facts from his life prove that Bishop Pavel remained a patriot of his homeland though he spent half of his life in emigration. The main part of the article describes the life of the future Novosibirsk archbishop during the time when he was only beginning his priesthood. It was during the World War II, hard time not only for our country but for the world as well. At that time Father Pavel (Golyshev) stayed in Western Europe where he nursed prisoners of war. For this, he was subjected to the arrest by the German occupation authorities. So, Father Pavel had made his contribution to the victory over fascism, our mutual enemy. After war the future archbishop came back to his homeland and continued his religious service. The article gives citations from Farther Pavel’s notes which were published in the Journal of the Moscow Patriarchy of the Russian Orthodox Church, and which witness the author’s love for the Church of Christ and for the Homeland. In 1957 Father Pavel was called to the episcopal ministry. He took the Chairs in Perm, Astrakhan, Novosibirsk and Vologda dioceses consecutively, and was known as an exceptionally responsible person in doing his archpastoral duties. His services were highly estimated by the Patriarchy and in 1964 Bishop Pavel was elevated to the rank of archbishop. The last years of his life he again nursed our compatriots abroad. The article shows that archbishop Pavel (Golyshev) did his best to live in full accordance with his Christian vocation in all circumstances of his life.
