The article presents the history of development of the Irkutsk province residents’ perception of the artistic life at the beginning of the 20th century. Periodical press sources, which reported on art exhibitions in different ways, are considered. On the one hand newspapers and magazines reflect participation of artists in creation of picturesque canvases. On the other hand they describe results of art events and visitors’ reaction to works of art in detail. The events of the early 20th century fostered public opinion about painting and the work of famous masters. Gradually the knowledge of Russian culture broadened. Artists were given the opportunity to develop their creativity and present their work at exhibitions in museums and galleries. In the process of acquaintance with the paintings of famous masters of Russia, the public became actively interested in current social problems. The study allows us to draw the following conclusions. Periodicals of the Irkutsk province – “Eastern review”, “Siberia”, “Siberian weekly”, “Siberian newspaper for all”, “Messenger of Monday”, humorous weekly “Siberian almanac” and others allow reconstructing a panoramic picture of artistic life in the region in the early 20th century. The editions reveal active educational activities of both creative organizations and masters, show the place and role of art exhibitions in the life of the region, and the dynamics of perception of artistic life among the locals. Besides, through thematic illustrations in periodicals it is possible to determine the degree of influence of famous masters on the urban society more precisely. The significance of the periodical press sources for the study of artistic life in the urban space of the Irkutsk province at the beginning of the 20th century is determined.
