Oral History of the Great Patriotic War: Institutionalization and Research Results in the South of Russia

The article deals with the formation of the oral history of the Great Patriotic War as a area research in the South of Russia. The chronological framework of the article covers the period from the war years to our time. The Commission on the History of the Great Patriotic War of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR conducted the first polls in the South of the RSFSR directly during the war years. Folklorists and ethnographers continued to study the reflection of war in the people’s memory during the postwar period. However, professional historians have practically stopped recording narratives about the war. In the 1990s, a significant upsurge in oral-historical research of the Great Patriotic War began in the South of Russia. Many researchers recorded war veterans, eyewitnesses to the events of the Nazi occupation and ethnic deportations, children of the war in the 2000s. Large research projects within the framework of state assignments of academic research institutions, grants from the Russian Humanitarian Science Foundation, the Russian Foundation for Basic Research and the Russian Science Foundation have largely contributed to the institutionalization of oral history research. As a result, the space of memory of the war has become differentiated, and the traumatic experience of representatives of various groups of the population finds a place in it.
