The article discusses the process of formation of historical memory of the Great Patriotic War. The importance of the State Information System “Memory”, created by employees of the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation to store information about the soldiers of the Great Patriotic War, is shown. An attempt is made to show the process of formation of ideas about the war among the post-war generation of Russian citizens through the perception and comparison of family memories of the war veterans and their military path with the information contained in historical literature. An essay on the fate and deed of a participant in the Battle of Stalingrad, born in Siberia in a large peasant family, is presented. Based on the memoirs of a war veteran, some features of frontline life and the psychology of a person who was at the front are shown: the attitude to death, military duty. The combat path of one of the Siberian guards divisions participating in the defense and liberation of the Mamaev Kurgan was briefly traced.
