DOI: 10.31518/2618-9100-2019-2-6
Revelation of the literature connections between the first ideologists of the early stage of the Old Believers is very remarkable, especially if one takes into account the scale of personalities who were at the forefront of the Old Believers movement. They were Spiridon Potemkin, Deacon Feodor, Protopope Avvakum, priest Nikita Dobrynin, hegumen Feoktist. The article attempts to study the impact of intellectual leaders on their environment, to identify the nature of the influence of their activity and literature on the formation of certain qualities in this community, as well as to establish the meaning and role of various types of communication – direct interpersonal, mediated (textual). The epistolary and documentary material attracted for this purpose, a description of the libraries of the Old Believers ideologues, and the identification of direct contacts made it possible to characterize their perception of church reform, as well as vigorous activities aimed at defending “paternal orthodoxy”. Old Believers publicists tried to provide convincing arguments for their perspective on the changes in the ritual, liturgical practice and editing of liturgical books. To this end, they created socially significant polemical-dogmatic and journalistic writings, discussed them among themselves, copied and distributed among like-minded people. The Appendix contains the biography of Spiridon Potemkin, created by Deacon Fyodor, and the chapter about Spiridon from the “Grapes of Russia” by Semen Denisov.
