Yakov S. Lurye was an outstanding Russian historian, an expert in source studies, investigator of Russian chronicles and publisher of different sources concerning the Medieval Russia. The period of his formation as a pro-fessional during the Great Patriotic War remains poorly known. It was in the city of Tomsk, in evacuation, one year after his graduation from the Leningrad University that he defended his candidate's dissertation (equivalent of PhD). This early work already reveals Lurye's inclination to study Russian history in the context of European events which let him promote significantly studies of the Russian-English relations at the 16th century.
Lurye's determination to preserve his intellectual independence is evident from the dissertation. It is only mod-erately that he adopts his research to the official ideology. Quotations from K. Marx and F. Engels are used by min-imum; only after the consultant's advice a reference to a speech of V. Molotov was added.
The defense of dissertation by Yakov Lurye in Tomsk was not a provincial event. Leading professors evacuated from the capital cities, chairholders from the Tomsk university became his opponents; a classic of the Russian medi-eval studies Alexandre Neusykhin showed his interest and positive attitude in the opponent's statement. Teaching at Yeniseysk and defending the dissertation at Tomsk, Lurye remained at the front line of the Russian historical science.
The successful defense of dissertation in 1942 required Yakov Lurye's commitment and hard work. He used the very poor opportunities to reach his own goal and he did succeed.
